In Conversation with Cadel Evans: A Chat with Robbie McEwen

Robbie McEwen: Hey Cadel, it’s been a while since we shared the peloton. How’s retirement treating you?

Cadel Evans: Robbie, mate! It’s been good, can’t complain. Spending a lot more time with the family and less time wearing lycra, which is nice. How about you? Still sprinting around?

Robbie McEwen: Ha! I’ll always be a sprinter at heart, but these days, my sprinting is mostly to keep up with the kids. Have you been able to keep up with any of the young guns in the Tour? They’re flying!

Cadel Evans: Absolutely. It’s incredible to watch. The pace they set is staggering. Reminds me of our days but on turbo mode. Have you seen Pogacar? That kid is unbelievable.

Robbie McEwen: Oh, totally. And then there’s Van Aert, who seems like he can do everything – sprint, climb, time trial. Almost makes me tempted to jump back on the bike, almost.

Cadel Evans: I feel you. But I think I’ll stick to the occasional ride for leisure. No more chasing breakaways and enduring mountain stages. Speaking of which, what’s your favorite memory from our racing days?

Robbie McEwen: There are so many, but I’d say the 2007 Tour de France stands out. That stage where you launched that attack and took everyone by surprise. Seeing you in the yellow jersey was something else. How about you, any fond moments?

Cadel Evans: Definitely. Winning the 2011 Tour de France was the highlight, of course. But I also cherish those moments behind the scenes, the camaraderie, and just tackling the grueling stages with mates like you. It’s those shared experiences that stick with you.

Robbie McEwen: Couldn’t agree more. It’s funny, we battled it out on the roads, but off the bike, we had some great laughs. So, what’s on the horizon for Cadel Evans? Any big plans?

Cadel Evans: Oh, you know me, I’m keeping busy. I’ve got a few projects in the works, including some charity events and working with young cyclists. And of course, there’s the Great Ocean Road Race that I help organize. How about you, Robbie?

Robbie McEwen: That’s amazing. I’m doing a bit of commentary and mentoring young sprinters. And there’s always some race or event calling my name. Think we’ll ever see a Cadel vs. Robbie showdown again, even if it’s just for fun?

Cadel Evans: Ha! You never know. Maybe we’ll set up a charity race one day. Until then, a coffee ride sounds perfect. What do you say?

Robbie McEwen: Sounds like a plan, mate. I’ll bring the coffee if you bring the stories. Deal?

Cadel Evans: Deal. Here’s to the rides, the races, and everything in between. Cheers, Robbie.
