Catching Up with Carly Patterson: A Chat with Mary Lou Retton

Carly Patterson: Hey Mary Lou! It’s so great to finally have a chance to sit down and chat. It feels like forever since we last crossed paths at that gymnastics event. How have you been?

Mary Lou Retton: Hey Carly! I know, right? Time flies! I’ve been doing well, keeping busy with motivational speaking and spending time with my family. How about you? I hear you’ve got your hands full with your own growing family!

Carly Patterson: Oh, absolutely. Life is a whirlwind between my kids and my music career. It’s funny how life takes you in so many different directions. Speaking of which, how did you transition from gymnastics into your current endeavors?

Mary Lou Retton: It was definitely a journey! After gymnastics, I knew I wanted to stay connected to the sport but also explore new horizons. Motivational speaking gave me a platform to share my experiences and inspire others. What about you? How did you end up diving into music?

Carly Patterson: Music was always a passion of mine, even during my gymnastics career. After retiring, I took the leap and pursued it professionally. It’s amazing how performing on stage offers the same thrill as competing. Do you ever miss the competition?

Mary Lou Retton: There’s definitely a part of me that misses the adrenaline rush of competing. But seeing the next generation of gymnasts, including those who may have looked up to us, is incredibly fulfilling. Have you been keeping up with today’s gymnastics scene?

Carly Patterson: Oh, for sure! The level of talent is off the charts. I get chills watching them perform. It’s like the sport has evolved so much, but the heart of it remains the same. Any advice you wish you could give to the young gymnasts out there today?

Mary Lou Retton: Absolutely. I’d tell them to savor every moment and not get too caught up in the pressure. The lessons they learn and the friendships they form are just as important as the medals they win. How about you, Carly, any words of wisdom from your vault?

Carly Patterson: I’d say the same—enjoy the journey and stay true to yourself. The hard work and dedication are worth it, not just for the accolades, but for the person you become in the process. And never be afraid to chase different dreams, like switching from balance beams to microphones!

Mary Lou Retton: Well said! It’s all about embracing new challenges and growing from them. Who knows, maybe we’ll see some of today’s gymnasts making their mark in completely different fields tomorrow.

Carly Patterson: Exactly! It’s been such a pleasure catching up, Mary Lou. Let’s not wait so long before we do this again.

Mary Lou Retton: Agreed, Carly! Take care and give my best to your family. Let’s inspire the world together!

Carly Patterson: Definitely! Until next time!
