Inside the Dugout: A Conversation with Eric Lauer and Trevor Bauer
Trevor Bauer: Eric! Man, it’s been a while. How’s the season treating you? Heard you’ve been dialing in with that fastball of yours.
Eric Lauer: Trevor! Good to see you, buddy. Yeah, the season’s been a roller coaster, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. How about you? Staying busy with the vlogs and pitching clinics?
Trevor Bauer: You know it. Can’t stay still, always something brewing. Speaking of which, I saw your last game. That two-seam? Nasty. Are you tweaking your grips, or is it just some good old-fashioned muscle memory?
Eric Lauer: Ha! A little bit of both, I guess. I’ve been working on some mechanics during the off-season. Also, I must confess, I’ve been obsessing over some advanced analytics. They help more than people think.
Trevor Bauer: Ah, the analytics rabbit hole. Once you get into spin rates and release points, it’s hard to get out. What’s been the most surprising stat that’s influenced your game?
Eric Lauer: Honestly, it’s the horizontal movement on my pitches. I started paying more attention to it, and it’s really made me see how hitters react differently. It’s given me a new appreciation for pitch sequence strategy.
Trevor Bauer: Speaking of strategy, you’ve always had that competitor’s edge. What’s your mental game like when you’re up against a big hitter, someone like Mike Trout or Aaron Judge? What runs through your mind?
Eric Lauer: Oh man, facing those guys is like playing chess at 100 mph. I tell myself to stay aggressive, stick to my strengths, and trust my preparation. And sometimes, a bit of luck doesn’t hurt, right?
Trevor Bauer: Absolutely, a little luck goes a long way. So, off-field, what’s new? Picked up any hobbies or adventures lately?
Eric Lauer: I’ve actually been getting into cooking. You know, after all those years of eating on the go, I decided to start experimenting in the kitchen. It’s been fun, and surprisingly therapeutic.
Trevor Bauer: Cooking, huh? Now that’s interesting. What’s your go-to dish these days?
Eric Lauer: Right now, I’m perfecting my homemade pasta. A good marinara sauce, fresh noodles, doesn’t get better than that. How about you? Tried anything new lately?
Trevor Bauer: I’ve been dabbling in some drone photography. It’s amazing what you can capture from above, gives you a different perspective on things, much like baseball analytics.
Eric Lauer: That’s awesome. Seems like you’re always finding new ways to look at the world. Feels good to step outside the diamond every now and then, doesn’t it?
Trevor Bauer: Definitely. Keeps the mind fresh, and after all, baseball’s a game of adjustments—on and off the field. Anyway, let’s catch up after the next series. Maybe we can trade some pasta for drone shots!
Eric Lauer: Sounds like a deal, Trevor. Take care, man. Always a pleasure chatting with you.
Trevor Bauer: Likewise, Eric. Keep throwing those heaters!
