A Candid Conversation with Gymnastics Legend Igor Cassina: A Chat with Olympic Champion Simone Biles

Simone Biles: Hey Igor, it’s so awesome to finally catch up with you! I’ve always admired your unique style on the high bar, especially that incredible Cassina move. How did you come up with that?

Igor Cassina: Hi Simone! It’s great to chat with you too. The Cassina actually came from a lot of trial and error and pushing the boundaries of what the high bar routine could be. I wanted to create something new and challenging, you know? How about you, how do you keep coming up with those jaw-dropping moves?

Simone Biles: That’s amazing! For me, it’s about constantly challenging myself. I aim to break barriers and redefine what’s possible in gymnastics. Your innovation on the high bar really showed me the importance of creativity in our sport.

Igor Cassina: I totally agree. Creativity and the drive to push limits are key. Speaking of pushing limits, what’s your routine when you’re preparing for a big competition? I remember my days leading up to the Athens Olympics were intense!

Simone Biles: My routine is all about balance—intense training sessions but also making sure I get enough rest and mental preparation. It’s funny you mentioned Athens; watching you in 2004 inspired me so much. How did it feel when you realized you won the gold medal?

Igor Cassina: That’s so kind of you to say! Winning the gold was surreal. It was the culmination of years of hard work and an emotional roller coaster. I imagine you’ve felt the same with all your gold medals. What’s the most memorable moment from your competitions?

Simone Biles: Definitely! Each win is special. But I think the most memorable moment for me was during the 2016 Rio Olympics when the team won gold. That sense of camaraderie and collective effort was unforgettable. Do you miss competing?

Igor Cassina: I do, at times. But now, I enjoy coaching and helping young gymnasts develop their skills and passion for the sport. And speaking of coaching, any thoughts on stepping into a coaching role in the future?

Simone Biles: I’ve thought about it! I love inspiring the younger generation and sharing my knowledge. Maybe one day, you’ll see me coaching at a major event. Until then, it’s all about continuing to enjoy every moment in the sport.

Igor Cassina: That sounds fantastic, Simone. Keep shining and inspiring us all. It was great catching up with you!

Simone Biles: Likewise, Igor! Keep doing amazing things. Talk soon!
