A Spike of Insight: A Conversation Between Jesse Elser and Kerri Walsh Jennings

Kerri: Hey Jesse! Great to finally catch up with you. I’ve been following your progress on the court, and I have to say, you’re killing it. What’s been the most exhilarating moment for you in volleyball so far?

Jesse: Thanks, Kerri! That’s a tough one. I think winning the national championship with UBC was a highlight. There’s just something about the intensity and pressure of the finals that brings out the best in us.

Kerri: Oh, absolutely. I still remember that adrenaline rush every time I stepped onto the sand for a big match. Speaking of that, how do you stay so calm under pressure?

Jesse: Good question! I focus on controlling what I can control – my performance, my mindset. Deep breaths and visualizing successful plays also help. What’s your secret?

Kerri: For me, it’s always been about preparation. When you know you’ve put in the work, the confidence follows. Plus, trust in your teammates is huge. How’s your current team chemistry?

Jesse: Our team is like a family. We push each other hard in practices, and that really strengthens our bond. Off the court, we hang out and do stuff together, so that camaraderie definitely translates to better teamwork during games.

Kerri: That’s fantastic to hear. Team chemistry is everything. So, what’s next for Jesse Elser? Any big goals on the horizon?

Jesse: I’m aiming for more championships, both at the collegiate level and beyond. I also want to continue growing my game and perhaps play internationally soon. How about you, Kerri? Any more Olympic runs in you?

Kerri: Well, for now, I’m focused on mentoring the next generation, like yourself. I want to give back to the sport that has given me so much. But who knows? Volleyball has a way of pulling you back in! Any advice you’d give to young players starting out?

Jesse: I’d say, never stop loving the game. It’s easy to get caught up in the competition and pressure, but at the end of the day, remember why you started. And always be a student of the game—there’s always something new to learn.

Kerri: Well said, Jesse! It’s clear you have a bright future ahead in volleyball. Keep up the great work, and maybe we’ll see each other on the court someday—partner or opponent, who knows?

Jesse: That would be amazing, Kerri! Thanks for the chat and the wisdom. Until next time!
