Joe McCarthy in Conversation with Rugby Legend Brian O’Driscoll
Joe McCarthy: Hey, Brian! Thanks for taking the time to chat. It’s always great to get insights from someone with your experience.
Brian O’Driscoll (BOD): The pleasure’s all mine, Joe. It’s not every day I get to chat with one of the up-and-coming stars of Irish rugby. How’s everything going with you?
Joe McCarthy: It’s been an incredible journey so far. From getting called up to the Leinster squad to now being part of the national team setup, I sometimes have to pinch myself.
BOD: Absolutely, and you’ve been handling it spectacularly. I remember my early days – it’s a whirlwind, but it’s also some of the best memories you’ll ever make. Any standout moments for you so far?
Joe McCarthy: There are quite a few, but playing at the Aviva Stadium for the first time… that was surreal. Walking out and hearing that roar – nothing compares. And honestly, getting to watch and learn from some of the seasoned players has been eye-opening.
BOD: I can imagine. The Aviva has a special vibe. And speaking of seasoned players, who would you say has mentored you the most in the squad?
Joe McCarthy: I’d say Johnny Sexton has been invaluable. His leadership on and off the pitch is something else. He’s always pushing us to be better, and his tactical acumen is just otherworldly.
BOD: Johnny’s an inspiration for sure. Now, let’s talk strategy. You’ve got a knack for making those critical plays. How do you prep mentally for a big game?
Joe McCarthy: It’s a mix of visualization and staying grounded. I visualize the game, the plays, the opposition’s moves. But also, I try not to get too in my head about it. Having a routine helps – from pre-game meals to the music I listen to. How did you handle it back in the day?
BOD: Pretty similar, actually. Visualization is key. And you can’t underestimate the power of a good playlist! My go-to was always something with a bit of rock to amp me up. What’s on your pre-game playlist?
Joe McCarthy: It changes from time to time, but you can’t go wrong with a bit of AC/DC to get the blood pumping. And some local Irish bands, just to keep that connection to home strong.
BOD: Solid choices! Speaking of home, how do you balance the rigorous training and games with downtime? Any hobbies or interests that help you unwind?
Joe McCarthy: I try to keep a balanced life. When I’m not on the pitch, I love spending time with family and friends. We’ve got a great pub scene back home, so it’s nice to relax there. And I’m an avid hiker – Ireland’s landscapes are too beautiful to ignore.
BOD: Hiking is fantastic, especially in Ireland! It’s great to know you’ve got that balance. Lastly, any advice you’d give to young, aspiring rugby players looking to follow in your footsteps?
Joe McCarthy: Stay passionate and never stop learning. Listen to your coaches, watch as many games as you can, and always push yourself. And most importantly, enjoy the journey. Rugby is more than a sport – it’s a way of life.
BOD: Wise words, Joe. It’s been an absolute pleasure catching up with you. Best of luck with everything. I have no doubt you’ll achieve great things.
Joe McCarthy: Thanks, Brian. Your support means the world. Hopefully, I’ll make you and all of Ireland proud!
