Jordie Barrett & Richie McCaw: A Conversation Between Rugby Titans

Jordie Barrett: Hey Richie, it’s always a pleasure catching up with a legend like yourself. How’s life treating you after hanging up the boots?

Richie McCaw: Jordie, mate! It’s great to see you. Life’s been good, keeping busy with helicopter flights and staying involved with rugby in different ways. But I must confess, nothing ever matches the thrill of being on the field.

Jordie Barrett: I can only imagine. I mean, flying helicopters must come close though, right? Adrenaline and all.

Richie McCaw: Oh, it’s definitely exciting, but in a different way. No crowd roaring, no last-minute tries—just me and the controls. Speaking of last-minute tries, you’ve pulled off some miracles lately. What’s your secret?

Jordie Barrett: Ha! No secret, really. Just a lot of hard work, great teammates, and maybe a bit of Barrett family magic. You know how we do it in Taranaki.

Richie McCaw: The Barrett family magic is legendary by now. So, tell me, what are your thoughts on the current state of rugby? Anything you’d like to see change or evolve?

Jordie Barrett: Rugby’s evolving fast. The game’s getting more intense and even more tactical. I’d love to see more focus on player welfare though—it’s a tough sport and longevity is key. What about you? You’ve seen heaps of changes over the years; anything you miss from the old days?

Richie McCaw: Ah, the old days weren’t that long ago, Jordie! But yeah, I miss the camaraderie, the way we’d bond on and off the field. Rugby’s always been about the brotherhood for me. And those post-match beers…

Jordie Barrett: (laughs) Cheers to that! Speaking of bonding, any advice for a young player trying to find their feet in such a competitive environment?

Richie McCaw: Stay grounded, work hard, and never stop learning. And most importantly, enjoy every moment. The journey is as important as the destination. Play your heart out, but don’t forget to take a moment to soak it all in.

Jordie Barrett: Wise words, Richie. I’ll keep that in mind. Who knows, maybe one day I’ll be the one giving advice to the new kids on the block!

Richie McCaw: I have no doubt about it. Keep flying high, Jordie—both on the field and off it. It’s been great catching up.

Jordie Barrett: Likewise, Richie. Let’s do this again soon. Maybe I’ll even hop on one of your helicopter tours one day!

Richie McCaw: Anytime, mate. Anytime.
