Inside the World of Gymnastics: A Candid Chat with Jordyn Wieber and Aly Raisman

Jordyn Wieber (JW): Hey Aly! It’s been a while since our Fierce Five days. How’s everything going?

Aly Raisman (AR): Hey Jordyn! It’s going great, thanks. I’ve been really enjoying speaking out on important issues and working with various organizations. What about you?

JW: It’s been a whirlwind for sure. Coaching at Arkansas has been such a rewarding experience. Seeing the new generation of gymnasts blossom is something else!

AR: That sounds incredible. Coaching must bring its own unique set of challenges and rewards, right?

JW: Absolutely! It’s a different kind of pressure but also incredibly fulfilling. I’m constantly learning new things from my athletes. What’s been the most rewarding part of your recent advocacy work?

AR: Honestly, seeing the impact it has on people. When someone tells me that my story helped them in some way, it makes everything worthwhile. But I do miss the thrill of competing sometimes. Do you ever feel that way too?

JW: Oh, for sure! I mean, nothing beats the adrenaline rush of sticking a landing, but watching my gymnasts hit their routines comes pretty close. Do you ever think about what our lives would be like if we weren’t gymnasts?

AR: All the time! Maybe I’d be a full-time yogi or a marine biologist. Who knows? What about you?

JW: Honestly, I’d probably still be in sports in some capacity. Maybe a sports psychologist or something. The mental game has always intrigued me.

AR: Speaking of the mental game, I feel like gymnasts have such a unique perspective on resilience and focus. Any tips for staying mentally strong?

JW: Visualization is huge for me. I used to visualize my routines before bed every night. Now, it’s more about visualizing my goals for my athletes and the team. How about you?

AR: Meditation and mindfulness have been game-changers. It’s amazing how taking even a few minutes to just breathe can reset everything.

JW: Totally. It’s all about finding what works for you. Alright, last question: what’s one memory from the Olympics that you’ll never forget?

AR: So many to choose from! But I think that moment when we all realized we had won the team gold. The pure joy and relief were indescribable. What about you?

JW: Same here. That shared triumph and looking around to see my best friends experiencing it with me—I’ll cherish that forever.

AR: It was truly magical. Here’s to many more amazing moments ahead, whether in gymnastics or beyond!

JW: Cheers to that!
