Inside the Dugout: A Chat with Justin Verlander and Ken Griffey Jr.
Ken Griffey Jr.: Hey Justin! Great to finally sit down with you. Congrats on that last win, man. Your pitching was on fire as usual.
Justin Verlander: Thanks, Ken! Coming from you, that means a lot. I heard you’ve been staying active with all these charity events and golf tournaments. How’s that going?
Ken Griffey Jr.: Oh, you know me, can’t sit still for too long. Just trying to stay busy and give back where I can. Speaking of staying busy, how’s the arm holding up? Any new routines you’re throwing into the mix?
Justin Verlander: Man, it’s a constant battle. I’ve been incorporating some pilates and yoga into my routine. Helps keep the body flexible and the mind sharp. Plus, I’m trying to give Tom Brady a run for his money on longevity, you know?
Ken Griffey Jr.: (laughs) I love it. Whatever it takes to keep throwing those heaters, right? Do you ever think about the evolution of the game? I mean, the analytics, the tech… it’s all changed so much since we first started.
Justin Verlander: Absolutely. I’m a big fan of using data to get an edge. But at the end of the day, it’s still about trusting your gut and dominating on the mound. Do you ever miss that feeling, stepping up to the plate, knowing you could change the game with one swing?
Ken Griffey Jr.: You bet I do. There’s nothing like that adrenaline rush. But watching the new generation light it up is almost as good. Almost. (smirks) Speaking of the new generation, got any young pitchers you’ve been mentoring?
Justin Verlander: A few. I love sharing tips and tricks with the next crop of stars. It’s like passing the torch, you know? Plus, it keeps me on my toes. How about you? Any new hitting prodigies you’re grooming to be the next Kid?
Ken Griffey Jr.: There are a couple of young talents I’m keeping an eye on. It’s all about balancing the fundamentals with letting them find their own style. Just like you do with pitching, right?
Justin Verlander: Exactly. It’s all about balance and making the game your own. Well, Ken, it’s been great catching up. Let’s not leave it so long next time. And maybe I’ll see you out on the golf course soon?
Ken Griffey Jr.: You’re on, Justin. Just don’t get your pitching mixed up with your golfing. Those greens are unforgiving! (laughs) Catch you later, man.
