An Imaginary Conversation: Ketel Marte and Ken Griffey Jr.
Ketel Marte: Hey Ken! It’s surreal to be sitting down with you. You’ve been one of my idols growing up. I remember watching your highlights and trying to imitate your swing in the backyard.
Ken Griffey Jr.: Thanks, Ketel! That means a lot. I’ve watched your game, too, and man, you’ve got some serious skills. What really drove you to push the envelope so much in the majors?
Ketel Marte: You know, Ken, it’s all about the love of the game. Growing up in the Dominican Republic, baseball is everywhere. It’s in our blood. My family always encouraged me but playing against such high competition back home really sharpened my instincts.
Ken Griffey Jr.: I hear you. Your switch-hitting ability always impresses me. Did anyone in particular inspire you to switch-hit, or was it something you picked up on your own?
Ketel Marte: It was more of a necessity at first. In the young leagues, seeing different types of pitchers, I thought, ‘why not try both?’ But honestly, watching Chipper Jones had a big influence on me. Who didn’t want to be like Chipper?
Ken Griffey Jr.: Chipper was phenomenal. Makes sense. So, you’ve really come into your own in the majors. What’s been your favorite moment so far?
Ketel Marte: Definitely making it to the All-Star Game in 2019. That felt like the culmination of all the hard work. But more than that, suiting up every day with my teammates and battling through a season, that camaraderie, you can’t beat it.
Ken Griffey Jr.: True, true. The bond with teammates is special. I have to ask, though—what’s your pre-game ritual? Do you have any good luck charms?
Ketel Marte: Oh, you know it! I’m very particular about my pre-game playlist. It’s got to have a mix of Latin hits and classic hip-hop to get me pumped. Plus, I always wear my wristband on my right arm; it’s my little piece of consistency in the chaos.
Ken Griffey Jr.: I dig that. Music can really set the tone. Well, Ketel, keep doing what you’re doing. Your passion and dedication are electric, and it’s been great watching you light up the field.
