A Chat with Kōhei Uchimura: Reflecting on a Legendary Career
Interviewer: Hey Kōhei, it’s such an honor to sit down with you today. You’ve had an incredible career in gymnastics. How does it feel looking back at everything you’ve achieved?
Kōhei Uchimura: Thank you! Just call me “King Kōhei.” (laughs) Looking back, it feels a bit surreal, honestly. I never imagined I’d achieve so much when I started. It’s been quite a ride.
Interviewer: I think “King Kōhei” is well-earned! You’ve changed gymnastics forever. What would you say was the most challenging moment in your career?
Kōhei Uchimura: Ah, that’s a tough one. There were many challenging moments, but I think sustaining my level of performance was the biggest challenge. Competing at elite levels, staying injury-free, and constantly innovating my routines—it’s like balancing on the beam every single day.
Interviewer: That’s impressive. Speaking of injuries, I remember during the 2017 World Championships, you injured your ankle but still competed. Where do you find that kind of determination?
Kōhei Uchimura: Determination comes from passion. I love gymnastics more than anything else. Even when my body says no, my heart says yes. It’s about pushing limits and redefining what’s possible.
Interviewer: That passion surely sets you apart. You’ve also earned the nickname “Superman.” What does it mean to you?
Kōhei Uchimura: “Superman” (laughs), it’s flattering but also a lot to live up to. I think it symbolizes the belief people have in my abilities. It’s a reminder of the responsibility I carry, to inspire and push the boundaries of gymnastics.
Interviewer: You’ve certainly inspired so many, including the next generation of gymnasts. What advice would you give to young aspiring gymnasts who look up to you?
Kōhei Uchimura: Always stay curious and never stop perfecting your craft. Gymnastics is about precision and creativity. It’s not only about winning but also about expressing yourself and enjoying the journey. Hard work and perseverance are your best friends in this sport.
Interviewer: Words of wisdom, indeed. Now, Kōhei, outside of gymnastics, what do you enjoy doing in your free time?
Kōhei Uchimura: When I’m not training, I love spending time with my family. I’m also a big fan of anime and video games! They’re a great way to relax and unwind.
Interviewer: That’s fantastic! Balancing such an intense career with leisure is important. Any favorite anime or games?
Kōhei Uchimura: Oh, too many to count! But I’d say “One Piece” is an all-time favorite. As for games, I really enjoy playing “Final Fantasy.” It’s a nice break from reality.
Interviewer: “One Piece” and “Final Fantasy”—solid choices! Kōhei, it’s been wonderful chatting with you. Thank you for sharing your journey and insights with us.
Kōhei Uchimura: Thank you! It’s been my pleasure. Always happy to talk about the sport I love and the little things that make life enjoyable.
