Champions in Conversation: Kristina Vogel Meets Anna Meares

Kristina Vogel: Anna! It’s so good to see you again. It feels like forever since we raced side-by-side on the track. How have you been keeping?

Anna Meares: Kristina! It’s been ages. I’ve been doing great, thanks. A bit less competitive these days but still very much in love with cycling. How about you? How’s life treating you post-competition?

Kristina Vogel: Life’s been a whirlwind, to say the least. Transitioning from an athlete to an advocate and mentor has been quite the journey. Lots of new challenges, but it’s incredibly rewarding. And, of course, still keeping the spirit of racing alive in my heart.

Anna Meares: I can imagine! You’ve become such an inspiration for so many, especially after everything you’ve been through. Your resilience is absolutely awe-inspiring. What’s been your focus lately in terms of advocacy?

Kristina Vogel: Thank you, Anna. That means a lot coming from you. I’ve been heavily involved in promoting accessibility in sports and pushing for better infrastructure for para-athletes. It’s crucial to create environments where everyone feels empowered to participate, don’t you think?

Anna Meares: Absolutely. Sports should be for everyone, and it’s inspiring to see how you’re making a real impact. I’ve been focusing on coaching and mentoring young cyclists. There’s so much talent out there, and guiding them through the ups and downs is my way of giving back.

Kristina Vogel: That’s fantastic! The next generation is in great hands with you. Speaking of, do you miss the adrenaline and the rush of competition?

Anna Meares: Oh, definitely! There’s nothing quite like the thrill of a sprint finish. But seeing young athletes achieve their dreams brings a different kind of satisfaction. And you? Do you still get on the bike for a casual ride?

Kristina Vogel: I do! Although it’s more for fun and fitness now. The days of intense training are behind me, but I still love the feeling of the wind and that sense of freedom. It’s a different pace, but it’s wonderful.

Anna Meares: That’s the spirit! It’s all about keeping that passion alive, in whatever form it takes. Cheers to many more years of inspiring and influencing the world of cycling!

Kristina Vogel: Cheers to that, Anna. Here’s to the legends of the track continuing to make waves on and off the bike!
