A Coffee Chat with Lars Boom and Marianne Vos

Lars Boom (LB): Hey, Marianne! It’s great to catch up with you over coffee. It’s been a while since we both had a breather from training and racing. How’s everything going?

Marianne Vos (MV): Hi, Lars! I know, right? It feels like ages since we’ve had the chance to just sit down and chat. Everything’s been crazy busy with the season. How about you?

LB: Oh, you know how it is—always something on the go. Between road racing, cyclo-cross, and managing the new cyclists under my wing, it’s a bit of a whirlwind. Speaking of racing, that finish at the Women’s Tour was out-of-this-world! How do you keep pushing the boundaries?

MV: Thanks, Lars! It’s all about the passion and love for the sport. Plus, watching you tackle those tough terrains in cyclo-cross has always been a huge inspiration. It’s like you’re on a constant adventure!

LB: Haha, I’m all about the mud and obstacles, you know that! But seriously, watching your versatility across track, road, and cyclo-cross is like seeing a masterclass in action. Do you ever get tired of the constant switch between disciplines?

MV: Sometimes it’s exhausting, but it keeps things interesting. One day I could be sprinting on the velodrome, and the next day could be navigating treacherous cobbles in a classic. It’s challenging but so rewarding. What about you? You’ve seamlessly transitioned from a rider to a mentor now. How’s that shift been?

LB: It’s been an incredible journey, really. Guiding new talents and helping them carve out their paths is fulfilling. Watching them grow reminds me of how we started off with all that raw energy and determination. Plus, I still get to hop on the bike and join them, which is the best part!

MV: That’s fantastic. The cycling world definitely benefits from experienced riders like you mentoring the newbies. By the way, any upcoming events you’re particularly excited about?

LB: Definitely looking forward to the next cyclo-cross season. There’s something about the adrenaline rush and sheer unpredictability of it that gets me every time. And, of course, I’m always excited to see how the youngsters fare in the upcoming races. How about you? Any major goals this season?

MV: For me, it’s the World Championships. Every time I line up for that race, it feels like the first time, with all the nerves and excitement. Here’s to another thrilling season for both of us!

LB: Cheers to that, Marianne! Let’s make it a season to remember. And now, let’s enjoy this coffee before we dive back into the chaos of training and racing!

MV: Absolutely! Here’s to great coffee and even greater adventures on the road!
