Conversations with Champions: Lavinia Miloșovici and Nadia Comăneci Dive Deep
Nadia Comăneci: Lavinia, it’s always a pleasure to chat with a fellow gymnast who understands the ups and downs of the sport. So, tell me, what got you into gymnastics in the first place?
Lavinia Miloșovici: Nadia, the pleasure is mine! Growing up in Lugoj, I was always an energetic child. My parents enrolled me in gymnastics to channel that energy, and from the moment I stepped onto the mat, I was hooked. Watching you achieve that perfect 10 in Montreal was incredibly inspiring too.
Nadia Comăneci: Ah, those were the days! It’s amazing how a moment can ignite a passion. You’ve had your share of perfect scores and pioneering moves. Which achievement are you most proud of?
Lavinia Miloșovici: It’s hard to pick just one. But the all-around gold medal in the 1991 World Championships was special. Not only because of the medal, but because it felt like a culmination of all the hard work and sacrifice. How about you? What moment stands out the most?
Nadia Comăneci: Besides the perfect 10, I’d say my return to gymnastics in 1979. It was a different challenge, facing the pressure of maintaining an image and competing with younger athletes. But back to you — I’ve always been curious, what’s your training regimen like post-retirement?
Lavinia Miloșovici: Great question! I still stay active, but I focus more on overall fitness rather than high-intensity conditioning. Yoga, pilates, and a lot of stretching. It’s important to keep the body moving, but in a gentler way. How do you stay in shape?
Nadia Comăneci: Pretty much the same. I’ve also picked up a bit of hiking recently, which is fantastic for both the mind and body. Speaking of which, mental health is such an important topic. How did you cope with the pressure during your competitive days?
Lavinia Miloșovici: It’s such a crucial issue. I had a great support system with my coaches and family, but also found solace in routines — having a structured day helped. Of course, there were tough times, but remembering my ‘why’ kept me grounded. How did you handle it back then?
Nadia Comăneci: Quite similarly, actually. Discipline and a strong support network were key. And now, I advocate for young athletes to have access to mental health resources and proper guidance. It’s about creating a balanced life, don’t you think?
Lavinia Miloșovici: Absolutely. Balance is everything. And speaking of balance, any tips for upcoming gymnasts striving to achieve what you did?
Nadia Comăneci: Stay passionate, stay focused, but also stay yourself. The medals and recognition are amazing, but it’s your love for the sport and who you become through it that truly matters. How about you? Words of wisdom for the next generation?
Lavinia Miloșovici: Never lose the joy of what you do. Every challenge is an opportunity to grow, and every success is a reason to be humble. And, of course, always remember why you started. That’s the heart of it all.
Nadia Comăneci: Wise words, indeed. It’s been wonderful catching up and sharing insights. Here’s to inspiring the next generation!
Lavinia Miloșovici: Cheers to that, Nadia! Let’s keep the spirit of gymnastics alive and thriving.
