In Conversation with Mihai Brestyan: The Mastermind Behind Champions

Interviewer: Good morning, Mihai! It’s an absolute pleasure to have you here. For our readers who might not be familiar, Mihai is the incredible coach behind gymnastics legends like Aly Raisman and Alicia Sacramone. So Mihai, let’s start with a simple question: What drew you to the world of gymnastics?

Mihai Brestyan: Good morning! Thanks for having me. Gymnastics has always been fascinating to me. The combination of athleticism, artistry, and the sheer dedication it requires—it’s like nothing else. I grew up watching Nadia Comăneci and was inspired by her work ethic and grace. That set me on this path.

Interviewer: Nadia Comăneci—what a legend! Speaking of legends, you’ve coached some of them yourself. What’s it like training athletes who go on to become household names?

Mihai Brestyan: It’s a mix of pride and anxiety, if I’m being honest! (laughs) Working with athletes like Aly and Alicia, the stakes are high, but the rewards are even higher. It’s incredibly fulfilling to watch them succeed, knowing you’ve been part of their journey. But it also requires a lot of patience and fine-tuning—every day is a fresh challenge.

Interviewer: I can imagine! What’s one of the key factors you believe is essential for success in gymnastics?

Mihai Brestyan: Consistency. Talent can only take you so far. It’s the daily grind, the small improvements, the mental toughness that really make a difference. Consistency builds character and skill. Without it, all the talent in the world won’t get you to the top.

Interviewer: That’s powerful. So, let’s pivot a little. You’ve worked in both Romania and the United States. How have those experiences shaped your coaching style?

Mihai Brestyan: Great question. Romania gave me my foundational understanding and appreciation for the sport. The focus there is on discipline and technique. The U.S., on the other hand, added layers of innovation and a broader perspective. Combining the precision of Romanian gymnastics with the creativity and resources available in the States has been a winning formula for me.

Interviewer: That sounds like a perfect blend! With all your experience, what’s your advice for young, aspiring gymnasts reading this right now?

Mihai Brestyan: Ah, there are so many things I could say, but I’ll boil it down to this: Dream big, stay humble, and work incredibly hard. Trust your coaches, but also trust your own instincts. And most importantly, enjoy the journey. The medals and accolades are wonderful, but the lifelong lessons and friendships you’ll gain are equally valuable.

Interviewer: Beautifully said, Mihai. Thanks so much for sharing your insights with us. It’s been a pleasure!

Mihai Brestyan: Thank you! It’s been fun. Looking forward to seeing what’s next for all the young gymnasts out there!

Interviewer: Absolutely! Until next time!
