Paul Hamm and Shawn Johnson East Discuss Gymnastics and Life After Competition

Paul Hamm: Hey Shawn, it’s been a while! How have you been? I see you’re keeping busy with everything from gymnastics commentary to motherhood.

Shawn Johnson East: Hi Paul! It has been a whirlwind, but it’s all been amazing. Juggling commentary and being a mom definitely keeps me on my toes. Speaking of busy, how’s life treating you these days?

Paul Hamm: Oh, you know, keeping up with coaching and mentoring young gymnasts. I love seeing their potential and helping them chase their dreams. But, man, it’s a different kind of challenge compared to our competitive days.

Shawn Johnson East: Absolutely, coaching is a whole new ball game. I feel like mentoring is almost as rewarding as competing. Seeing the spark in the eyes of young athletes—it’s the best.

Paul Hamm: Totally agree! Remember those nerve-wracking moments before a big competition? Now we’re the ones trying to calm those nerves and get the best performance out of our trainees. It’s like living it all over again, but from the other side.

Shawn Johnson East: Yes! It’s funny how we used to think our coaches were just giving us motivational talks, and now we’re the ones doing it. By the way, do you ever miss competing?

Paul Hamm: Sometimes I do. There’s nothing quite like the adrenaline rush of sticking a landing or hearing the crowd’s applause. But I think I’ve found a new passion in helping others. How about you? Ever think about a comeback?

Shawn Johnson East: Haha, I think those days are behind me. It’s fun to think about, but my priorities have definitely shifted. Nowadays, I get that thrill from different achievements, like my daughter’s first steps or comments from fans who say they were inspired by my journey.

Paul Hamm: That’s beautiful. Life really does evolve in unexpected ways. You know, it’s crazy to think how much the sport has changed since we competed. The level of difficulty and innovation in routines now is mind-blowing.

Shawn Johnson East: For sure. The next-gen athletes are pushing the boundaries more than ever. It’s thrilling to watch and be a part of their journeys. Plus, the technology and training methods have improved leaps and bounds. We’re in the golden age of gymnastics!

Paul Hamm: Couldn’t agree more. Well, Shawn, I gotta get back to the gym, but it’s been awesome catching up. Let’s do this again soon!

Shawn Johnson East: Definitely, Paul! Let’s not wait too long next time. Take care and good luck with your coaching!

Paul Hamm: Thanks, Shawn! Same to you. Bye!

Shawn Johnson East: Bye!
