In Conversation with Pita Ahki and Beauden Barrett

Beauden Barrett: Hey Pita! Great to catch up. Seems like yesterday we were just trying to outdo each other on the training ground. How’s it going, mate?

Pita Ahki: Beeeeeaaauuddddeeeenn! Long time, man. Things are going really well. Just came off a solid season and feeling good. How about you? Still dazzling defences with those lightning feet?

Beauden Barrett: Haha, trying my best! Speaking of dazzling, I caught some of your highlights from the last game. Man, that offload in the dying minutes was something else. Do you practice that in training, or is it just pure instinct?

Pita Ahki: A bit of both, honestly. Coach always says, ‘Practice like you play.’ But when you’re in the heat of the moment, you really gotta trust your instincts and your teammates. How’s the body holding up these days?

Beauden Barrett: Feeling good, mate. Been doing a lot of recovery work to stay in shape. By the way, what’s your secret to staying consistent throughout the season? You’ve been so reliable for the team.

Pita Ahki: Oh, it’s no big secret. Just hard work, proper nutrition, and making sure I get enough rest. And of course, a bit of Netflix to unwind. How do you spend your downtime?

Beauden Barrett: Been trying my hand at surfing lately. Not as easy as it looks—I’m more used to dodging tackles than waves! But it’s a great way to stay active and clear the mind. Any hidden talents we don’t know about, Pita?

Pita Ahki: Surfing, eh? Nice! I dabble in a bit of guitar, actually. Helps me relax and take my mind off the game. Maybe we should start a rugby players’ band? You on drums?

Beauden Barrett: Haha, I reckon that could work! ‘The Tackling Tunes’ or something like that. Who knows, we might even go on tour. But seriously, what’s next on the horizon for you?

Pita Ahki: Just focusing on the season ahead, really. Want to keep improving and help the team lift some trophies. And maybe sneak in a bit of travel if the schedule permits. How about you? Any big plans post-rugby?

Beauden Barrett: Oh, plenty of ideas floating around. Coaching, maybe. Or even something in sports management. But for now, just enjoying every game and giving it my all. Good catching up, brother. Let’s not make it so long next time!

Pita Ahki: Absolutely, Beauden. Always great chatting with you. Until next time, keep those boots laced and the tries coming!

Beauden Barrett: Will do! Catch ya later, mate.
