In Conversation: Tom Dumoulin and Annemiek van Vleuten

Tom Dumoulin: Hey Annemiek! It’s great to catch up with you. How’s everything going?

Annemiek van Vleuten: Hey Tom! Things are fantastic. Just finished a grueling training session, but you know how it is. What about you? Enjoying the ‘retired’ life?

Tom: Oh, you bet! I’ve traded in my bike for some hiking boots and started exploring some pretty amazing trails. No more 200km rides, but the thrill of pushing my limits hasn’t faded. How about racing? Any exciting plans coming up?

Annemiek: Always! I’ve got my eyes set on the Tour de France Femmes next year. It’s been a long time coming, and I can’t wait to tackle those infamous climbs. How do you keep up the adrenaline without racing?

Tom: I’ve been doing quite a bit of freelance coaching, helping young riders develop their strategies and techniques. There’s a real sense of fulfillment in seeing them improve, and it keeps me connected to the sport. Plus, I’ve been dabbling in some gravel riding competitions – it’s a whole new world!

Annemiek: That sounds fantastic! Gravel riding is such a different animal, with all those unpaved roads and unpredictable terrains. Have you had any big crashes yet?

Tom: A couple of close calls but, thankfully, nothing major. It’s all about mastering the balance and reading the terrain – kind of like navigating cobblestones, just with more dust and adventure. Speaking of balance, how do you manage yours with such a busy racing schedule?

Annemiek: It’s a bit of a juggling act, honestly. Scheduling rest and recovery is as crucial as training hard. And, whenever I get the chance, I dive into yoga – it’s a great way to stay centered and flexible. And, of course, lots of coffee helps!

Tom: Ah, the magical elixir of cyclists everywhere! I swear, a good espresso can get you through anything. Speaking of that, any favorite coffee spots you discovered around the world during your races?

Annemiek: Too many to count! But one that stands out is this tiny café in Girona. It’s a hole-in-the-wall place, but their cortado is unbeatable. Any travel plans on your end, now that you have more free time?

Tom: I’m planning a trip to South America – want to explore Patagonia and maybe do some trail running. It’s about discovering new horizons and finding joy in different forms of challenge. You should join sometime; it could be a whole new adventure for both of us!

Annemiek: That sounds like an amazing idea! I’m always up for an adventure. Let’s make it happen! Just give me a bit of heads up so I can fit it between races. Until then, keep pushing those limits and inspiring the young guns!

Tom: Will do! And you keep conquering mountains and showing the world what true grit looks like. Catch you soon, Annemiek!

Annemiek: Definitely, Tom! Take care and happy trails!
