An Afternoon Chat with Will Skelton and Michael Cheika

Michael Cheika: Will! Great to see you, mate. How’s everything going in France?

Will Skelton: Ah, g’day Michael! France is fantastic. The rugby culture here is just something else. The fans are absolutely bonkers, in a good way!

Cheika: I can imagine. They live and breathe rugby over there. How’s the climate treating a Sydney boy like yourself?

Skelton: (laughs) You know, it took a bit of getting used to initially. The winter’s a bit colder than I’m used to, but I’m loving the change. Besides, it’s helped me build a better appreciation for a good cup of coffee!

Cheika: I bet it has! Speaking of change, how’s the transition to playing in Europe been? What’s different from Super Rugby?

Skelton: Oh, where do I start? The physicality stands out immediately, and there’s a massive emphasis on forward play. You know me, I love getting stuck in with the forwards, so it suits me perfectly.

Cheika: Absolutely, you always thrived in those close encounters. I remember some fierce scrimmages back in the day. Any standout memories so far with La Rochelle?

Skelton: Oh, definitely! Winning the Champions Cup was unreal. The atmosphere was electrifying. And sharing that moment with the boys was something I’ll never forget. Those post-match celebrations were legendary.

Cheika: Sounds epic. And how’s life off the field? Got any new hobbies apart from rugby and coffee?

Skelton: (laughs) Well, I’ve actually picked up a bit of French! Still a work in progress though. Besides that, been exploring the French countryside, which is absolutely breathtaking. Oh, and I’ve been trying my hand at some French cuisine. Turns out, I make a mean coq au vin!

Cheika: Coq au vin, huh? Impressive. Sounds like you’re turning into quite the Frenchman! Just don’t go trading your meat pies for too many baguettes!

Skelton: (laughs) Never, mate. Meat pies will always have a special place in my heart. But hey, variety is the spice of life, right?

Cheika: Couldn’t agree more. Well, it’s great to hear you’re thriving over there. Keep enjoying every moment and give my regards to the team. Let’s catch up properly when you’re next back Down Under.

Skelton: Absolutely, Michael. Great catching up with you. Looking forward to a proper catch-up and maybe even a few rounds of classic Aussie BBQ!

Cheika: It’s a date. Take care, Will!

Skelton: You too, mate!
