A Candid Conversation with Xander Bogaerts and David Ortiz: The Past, Present, and Future of Baseball
Xander Bogaerts: Hey Big Papi! It’s always good catching up with you. How’s retirement treating you, man?
David Ortiz: Xander, my brother! Retirement has been great, just enjoying life and spending time with the family. But you know me, I still keep a close eye on you guys. How’s it feel leading the Sox?
Xander Bogaerts: It’s been a ride, man. Lots of ups and downs, but that’s baseball for you. Honestly, taking on more of a leadership role has been both challenging and rewarding. Speaking of leadership, you were always the heart of the clubhouse. Any sage advice for a young vet like me?
David Ortiz: Man, you’re doing great. Just keep being yourself, leading by example. The young guys look up to you because of your work ethic and dedication. You’ve always been a grinder, and that rubs off on everyone around you.
Xander Bogaerts: Appreciate that, Papi. And you know what? Your legacy is something we all still talk about. Speaking of legacies, what do you think about the changes in the game today? The new rules, analytics, and all that?
David Ortiz: It’s wild, right? The game’s evolved so much even since I retired. Analytics, launch angles, shifts—it’s a different beast now. But at the end of the day, the fundamentals don’t change. You still gotta hit the ball, catch the ball, and throw the ball. How do you find balancing all that new info with just playing your game?
Xander Bogaerts: It’s a juggle, for sure. Analytics give us an edge, but sometimes you just have to trust your gut. I’ve learned to use the information as a tool, not as the gospel. Speaking of trusting your gut, remember that clutch homer you hit in Game 4 of the 2013 ALCS? Goosebumps, Papi!
David Ortiz: Oh man, that’s one for the memory books. Moments like that, you live for ’em. But Xander, I’ve seen you come through in the clutch time and again, too. You’ve got that ice in your veins. What’s your mindset in those big at-bats?
Xander Bogaerts: Honestly, I just try to stay as calm as possible and focus on the basics. See the ball, hit the ball. It’s easier said than done, but keeping it simple helps in high-pressure moments. It’s all about controlling what you can control.
David Ortiz: That’s the key right there. Control what you can control. Speaking of control, I hear you’ve been doing some great work off the field as well. How’s it been using your platform to give back?
Xander Bogaerts: It’s been incredible. I’ve been focusing on youth programs in Aruba and here in Boston. Giving kids opportunities to play baseball and learn life skills, it’s something I’m passionate about. Just trying to make a difference where I can, you know?
David Ortiz: That’s what it’s all about, my brother. Making a difference on and off the field. Keep doing your thing, Xander. The sky’s the limit for you.
Xander Bogaerts: Thanks, Papi. Means a lot coming from you. Let’s catch up again soon. And maybe hit the cages? Just for old times’ sake!
David Ortiz: You got it! Anytime, Xander. Keep shining out there.
