Exclusive: Mohammad Azharuddin in Conversation with Sachin Tendulkar
Sachin Tendulkar: Azhar Bhai! It’s been a while. How have you been?
Mohammad Azharuddin: Sachin! Great to see you, my friend. I’m doing well, keeping busy with cricket administration these days. How about you?
Sachin Tendulkar: Can’t complain. Spending time with family and working on my foundation projects. So, tell me, do you miss being on the field?
Mohammad Azharuddin: Oh, absolutely. The thrill of walking out to bat, the crowd cheering, it’s an irreplaceable feeling. Speaking of which, have you picked up the bat recently?
Sachin Tendulkar: (laughs) Occasionally, for some charity matches. The body doesn’t quite agree like it used to. Remember our partnerships? We had some memorable moments.
Mohammad Azharuddin: How could I forget? Especially that game against South Africa in 1996. The way you counter-attacked their bowlers was phenomenal. You made my job much easier at the other end!
Sachin Tendulkar: Come on, Azhar Bhai. You were the anchor back then. Your wristy flicks through the leg side – absolute poetry in motion. Speaking of which, where do you see the art of wrist play in today’s cricket?
Mohammad Azharuddin: It’s interesting. Players like Virat and Rohit have their own versions, but I do miss the traditional wrist play. It’s more about power hitting these days. What do you think?
Sachin Tendulkar: True. The game has evolved. But then, players adapt to the demands of the era. Your captaincy, for instance, was way ahead of its time. How do you reflect on your leadership now?
Mohammad Azharuddin: Leadership is about adaptation. Back then, fostering team cohesion was key. Today, it’s a blend of strategy, data analytics, and man-management. You nailed that during your captaincy too.
Sachin Tendulkar: (smiling) Every era has its challenges and beauties. What’s your view on the younger generation of cricketers?
Mohammad Azharuddin: They’re incredibly talented and fearless. But I often feel they should balance T20 glamour with the grit of Test cricket. We owe that to the game.
Sachin Tendulkar: Absolutely. The longer format teaches patience and resilience. By the way, have you been following the IPL intensely?
Mohammad Azharuddin: Oh yes, it’s a fantastic platform. How about you? Any favorites?
Sachin Tendulkar: (laughs) Mumbai Indians, obviously. But I appreciate good cricket from any team. We’ve come a long way since our playing days, haven’t we?
Mohammad Azharuddin: We certainly have. It’s been a wonderful journey, sharing the field with you was an honor. Here’s to the future of cricket!
Sachin Tendulkar: Cheers to that! Let’s catch up more often, Azhar Bhai. Plenty of memories to relive and new ones to make.
Mohammad Azharuddin: Definitely, Sachin. Till next time, take care!
