Chris Paddack Chats with Hall of Famer Trevor Hoffman: A Catching Up Session

Chris Paddack: Hey Trevor, thanks for sitting down with me today. How’s life after leaving the mound been treating you?

Trevor Hoffman: Life’s been good, Chris! Busy, but in a different way. I still keep my eyes on the game and love seeing guys like you out there giving it their all. How are you feeling this season?

Chris Paddack: It’s been a rollercoaster, honestly. Adjusting, learning, and trying to improve every day. Got any tips for a young pitcher trying to make his mark?

Trevor Hoffman: Absolutely. One of the biggest things I learned was the importance of a solid routine. Consistency in your preparation can make a huge difference. You’ve got the talent, no doubt — just channel that focus.

Chris Paddack: Yeah, that’s something I’m working on. Speaking of routines, everyone’s still talking about your changeup. How’d you come up with that grip?

Trevor Hoffman: Funny story, actually. It wasn’t something that happened overnight. Lots of trial and error, trying to emulate some of the greats I watched. Eventually, I found a grip that felt natural and the magic just sort of happened from there. What’s your go-to pitch these days?

Chris Paddack: It’s got to be the fastball. There’s nothing like blowing one past a batter. But I’ve been working on perfecting my changeup—watching old tapes of you, of course. Any secrets you can spill?

Trevor Hoffman: Haha, glad to hear those old tapes are still useful! The key with the changeup is all about deception. You want it to look just like the fastball coming out of your hand. Same arm speed, same mechanics. It’s a mind game as much as it is a physical one.

Chris Paddack: Mental game is huge, for sure. I’ve been reading a lot about sports psychology lately. Keeping your head in the game can sometimes be the hardest part.

Trevor Hoffman: 100%. It’s all about staying focused but relaxed. Meditation helped me a lot. Knowing when to dial in and when to let go. What’s your off-field escape?

Chris Paddack: Fishing, without a doubt. There’s something about being out on the water that just clears my head. How about you, Trevor?

Trevor Hoffman: Golf has become my go-to. Less about the score, more about the peace and quiet. Plus, it’s a decent workout. Any upcoming goals, Chris?

Chris Paddack: Just keep pushing to be the best version of myself, on and off the field. Maybe pick up some more strikeouts, even if they’re not with a Hoffman-esque changeup just yet.

Trevor Hoffman: You’re on the right path, Chris. Keep that hunger and you’ll go far. Proud to see you representing the Padres. We’ve got a bright future with you on the mound.

Chris Paddack: Thanks, Trevor. Means a lot coming from you. Let’s catch up again soon—maybe on the golf course next time?

Trevor Hoffman: Anytime! Just don’t expect any easy wins.
