Inside the Minds of Legends: Jordan Larson and Karch Kiraly Talk Volleyball

Jordan Larson: Hey Karch! Always a pleasure to catch up. So, I have to ask, how does it feel to be considered one of the greatest volleyball players of all time?

Karch Kiraly: Hey Jordan! It’s great to chat with you. You know, I’ve always felt that volleyball is a team sport, so any accolade I’ve earned is really a testament to the amazing teammates I’ve played with over the years. But enough about me. How does it feel to have that Olympic gold medal around your neck?

Jordan Larson: Oh, it was a dream come true! I mean, we’ve both experienced pressure on the big stage, but there’s something extraordinary about the Olympics, right? It was like every ounce of effort I’ve ever put into the sport was validated in that moment. By the way, how do you keep the passion for volleyball alive after all these years?

Karch Kiraly: For me, it’s the constant evolution of the game. There’s always something new to learn, a new tactic to master, or a young player with a fresh perspective. Speaking of young players, you’ve stepped into coaching a bit. How has that transition been?

Jordan Larson: It’s been interesting, to say the least! As a player, you focus so much on your own game, but as a coach, you’re responsible for the development of the entire team. It’s challenging but incredibly rewarding. I feel like I’m learning just as much as I’m teaching. What’s one piece of advice you’d give to up-and-coming volleyball stars?

Karch Kiraly: I’d say, never stop being a student of the game. Continuously seek out opportunities to grow, whether it’s through watching games, studying different techniques, or even absorbing advice from unexpected places. Actually, Jordan, what’s a lesson you’ve learned through your journey that you wish you knew earlier?

Jordan Larson: Definitely that setbacks are just setups for comebacks. It sounds cliché, but every time I faced a major obstacle, it forced me to push harder and improve. Oh, and patience—learning to trust the process has been huge for me. Speaking of which, as a coach now, how do you instill that kind of resilience in your players?

Karch Kiraly: It’s all about creating a culture where failure is seen as a learning opportunity, not a dead end. We celebrate effort and improvement just as much as victories. And honestly, watching you play and lead on the court has been a massive inspiration in that regard. So, what’s next on your agenda? Any big plans or projects on the horizon?

Jordan Larson: I’m excited to dive deeper into coaching and maybe even some broadcasting. I love sharing the sport with others, whether it’s through coaching or talking about it on a broader platform. And who knows? Maybe I’ll write a book someday! How about you, Karch? Any secrets you’re willing to spill about future plans?

Karch Kiraly: Well, I’m focused on continuing to build the national team and developing the next generation of champions. But a book from Jordan Larson? Now that’s something I’d read cover to cover!

Jordan Larson: Haha, thanks, Karch! Always great chatting with you. Here’s to more wins, more growth, and more stories to share!

Karch Kiraly: Absolutely! Cheers to that!
