Inside the Game: A Chat with Michael Parkinson and Kerri Walsh Jennings

Michael: Hey Kerri, it’s fantastic to chat with you today! You’ve had such an incredible career. How do you keep that passion alive on the sand, match after match?

Kerri: Michael, it’s always about the love of the game. The thrill of the competition, the joy of improvement, and playing alongside my teammates keeps me driven. How about you? Indoor volleyball is a whole different beast.

Michael: Absolutely, Kerri. The fast pace and the need for constant communication are what I thrive on. Speaking of which, what’s your take on the difference in dynamics between beach and indoor volleyball?

Kerri: Great question! Beach volleyball requires a lot more stamina and versatility. You have to be good at everything since it’s just two players on the court. Indoor, you have specialized roles which can be quite different. What do you find most challenging about indoor?

Michael: I’d say syncing perfectly with the team. Every player is like a cog in a machine—when it clicks, it’s magic. But if one piece is out of sync, it can throw off the entire game. What’s your secret to maintaining such a legendary partnership with Misty May-Treanor over the years?

Kerri: Trust and communication, Michael. We always made sure to support each other both on and off the court. Also, having fun is crucial—it’s easy to lose sight of that when you’re competing at a high level. Do you have a pre-game ritual that helps you get into the zone?

Michael: I definitely do! I listen to some high-energy music and do a specific series of stretches. It helps me focus and get pumped for the match. How about you? Any beachy rituals?

Kerri: Oh, absolutely. I usually start with a run on the beach to center myself, followed by some yoga. It helps me connect with the environment. Quick question – what advice would you give to young aspiring volleyball players?

Michael: Great advice, Kerri. I’d say, focus on your fundamentals and never underestimate the power of teamwork. And most importantly, enjoy the game. So, what’s next for you? Any exciting plans?

Kerri: Just continuing to promote the sport and inspire the next generation. Maybe a few more beach tournaments. And you, Michael—what’s on the horizon for you?

Michael: Well, I’m eyeing the next league season and hopefully some international competitions. Always aiming for that gold! It’s been awesome chatting with you, Kerri. Let’s catch a game together sometime!

Kerri: Absolutely, Michael! Best of luck with everything. Chat soon!
