Inside the Court: Yuki Ishikawa Chats with Saori Kimura

Saori Kimura (SK): Yuki! It’s great to see you. How’s everything going with the new season?

Yuki Ishikawa (YI): Hey Saori! It’s going fantastic. The team is really gelling together this year. But, you know, long hours at the gym and the constant travel… it’s all part of the job.

SK: True that! I remember those days well. Speaking of travel, any funny story from your recent trips?

YI: Oh, totally! We were in Italy and somehow ended up at this tiny, offbeat pizzeria in Naples. The place was packed with locals. We had to squeeze in, but the pizza was out of this world! Almost missed the next practice because we lost track of time stuffing our faces.

SK: Haha, classic Yuki! Italy always knows how to win hearts through the stomach. But it’s not all fun and games, right? What’s the toughest part of training for you these days?

YI: Definitely the mental game. Physical training, I’ve kind of got that down to a science. But staying mentally tough, especially during those critical match moments… that’s where the real challenge lies.

SK: Absolutely. I always found meditation and visualization pretty helpful. Do you have any specific techniques you use?

YI: Yeah, visualization’s big for me too. I also like to keep a journal. Writing down thoughts before and after games really helps me process and improve.

SK: That’s great to hear. I wish I’d started journaling earlier in my career. Your fans would love to see some of those entries someday!

YI: Maybe I’ll share a few snippets after we win the championship! Speaking of fans, it’s always heartwarming to see how supportive they are, not just in Japan but everywhere we go. It really fuels the team.

SK: Absolutely. By the way, how are you balancing volleyball with personal life? Any new hobbies?

YI: I’ve actually taken up photography. Capturing moments off the court helps me relax and appreciate all the little things around me. How about you? Are you still into gardening?

SK: Yes, my garden is my sanctuary. Nothing like getting your hands dirty and watching something grow. It keeps me grounded.

YI: That sounds so peaceful. Hey, maybe next off-season, I’ll come over and you can teach me a thing or two about gardening. Deal?

SK: Deal! And in return, I expect a stunning photo shoot from you! Keep smashing it on the court, Yuki, and remember to enjoy every moment.

YI: Thanks, Saori! You too. It’s always a pleasure catching up with you. Let’s do this more often.
